Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East) under Operation HADIN KAI have arrested a suspected supplier of cannabis sativa to Boko Haram terrorists during an intelligence-led operation in Borno State.

The arrest was carried out on January 23, 2026, in the Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State under Operation Desert Sanity V.

The troops’ spokesperson, Sani Uba, in a statement on Saturday,  said the suspect, Hauwa Abulazeez, aged 65, was believed to be a key supplier of illicit drugs to terrorist elements.

“The suspect is alleged to be one of the suppliers of cannabis sativa to Boko Haram terrorist elements operating through Askira Uba, Rumirgo, Gwahi, Wamdiyo, Uvu and Gaya,” Uba said.

Uba said preliminary investigations showed that the suspect sourced the drugs from the Sarti Baruwa Local Government Area of Taraba State and transported them through established routes for distribution across several communities within the operational theatre.

During the operation, he noted that 14 compressed blocks of cannabis sativa were recovered with an estimated total weight of about 30 kilograms.

The suspect is currently in custody, undergoing preliminary investigation, while follow-up actions are ongoing to identify and dismantle the wider trafficking network, according to Uba.

He said that disrupting drug supply chains linked to terrorist groups remains critical to weakening criminal and insurgent operations in the region.
