Relatives of Seif al-Islam Kadhafi, the son and one-time heir apparent of Libya’s former leader Moamer Kadhafi, announced his death on Tuesday.
While his advisor, Abdallah Othman Abdurrahim, and his cousin, Hamid Kadhafi, confirmed the passing, neither provided specific details regarding the cause or circumstances of his death.
Though his exact whereabouts had been a mystery for years, media reports suggest the 53-year-old died in Zintan, a city in northwestern Libya.
Once viewed as a reformist who acted as Libya’s de facto prime minister, Seif al-Islam’s reputation for moderation evaporated during the 2011 uprisings when he famously threatened “rivers of blood” to defend his father’s regime.

Following the 2011 revolution, he was captured in southern Libya and became the subject of an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant for crimes against humanity.
Although a Libyan court sentenced him to death in 2015, he was later granted amnesty by local authorities.
He attempted a political comeback in 2021 by registering as a presidential candidate, but the national elections were ultimately postponed.
