Nigeria is considering creating a dedicated sports visa category to make it easier for athletes, officials, and other sports stakeholders to enter and leave the country, officials said.
The proposal was discussed on Friday during a meeting between the chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, and the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, according to a statement by the commission.
NSC said the meeting was a “strategic engagement focused on advancing Nigeria’s sports ecosystem through coordinated government action.”
It said a key outcome of the discussions was a proposal to establish a “dedicated Sports Visa category framework” that would allow “seamless entry and exit for athletes, officials, and global sports stakeholders engaging with Nigeria.”
The commission said the initiative, once fully activated, would support Nigeria’s ambition to host “high-value tournaments, international programmes, and sports-driven investments.”
According to NCS, it would also open new avenues for the national sports economy, consistent with the RHINSE framework.
It added that “sustained inter-ministerial cooperation” would be required to position sports as a driver of economic growth, youth development and national pride.
