Gunmen have abducted around 30 people from two communities in the Kadarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, local clerics said Thursday.

Sources claim that the gunmen stormed two communities, which are believed to be Christian communities, late Monday, wounding a local chief and taking about 30 residents.

The development was confirmed by the head of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the north, Reverend Joseph Hayab.

“We received the report that bandits attacked Kutaho and Kugir communities and kidnapped around 30 people, including a catechist, his pregnant wife and their child,” Reverend Hayab told AFP.

He added that “eleven of them have escaped, and we are liaising with security agencies to get the rest back.”

The victims were allegedly taken to a town close to the border with Niger State, according to Rev. Fr Linus Matthew Bobai, who also confirmed the kidnappings.

Rev. Fr Bobai, the parish priest of St Joseph Catholic Church in Kadarko Local Government Area, disclosed that the community is in tension and that many residents have fled for their lives.

“Sincerely, after the attack, some soldiers came from the neighbouring village, went around, and after a while, we saw them coming back, and that’s all,” Rev. Fr Bobai said.

“We are handicapped. The community is under tension; over 98% of people have gone to a nearby village. Those of us who slept in the village yesterday are not up to 40.

“This evening, many of them went away because of fear and all that. We are very tensed. Some of us are afraid but we cannot run away because we are pastors, and we encouraged a few others to stay behind and look after the community.”

Last week, at least 51 people were abducted and three killed in Kaduna State, while in December, 183 Christian worshippers were taken from churches in Kauran Wali village and released three weeks later.
