Houthi fighters have claimed they used drones and missiles to attack a military base in southern Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia issued emergency alerts after explosions were heard near Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday.
Saudi Civil Defence issued alerts for Khamis Mushait Governorate and Abha city in Asir province.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the attack targeted the Sharurah base and its weapons depots and command centres.
He said the facilities were “managing the aggression against our nation and people” in a post on X.
The Houthis did not specify when the attack took place.
The claim comes as clashes have increased this week between the Iran-allied Houthis and Yemeni government forces backed by Saudi Arabia.
Residents were urged to move to the nearest safe location and remain there until the danger had passed.
Iran’s official news agency, IRNA, reported that “A few minutes ago, the sound of two explosions was heard on Qeshm Island, coming from the direction of the sea.”
An Iranian channel described the incident as a “new security incident in the Strait of Hormuz”.
