Security personnel were reported to have approached former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai on Thursday as he arrived at Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, from Cairo, Egypt.
The claim was made by El-Rufai’s media adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, in a post on his verified X account.
According to Adekeye, the officers spoke with El-Rufai after he disembarked and requested that he accompany them.
He reportedly declined, stating that he would not comply without a formal invitation.
Adekeye’s post read, “Security agents today attempted to arrest Malam Nasir El-Rufai as he arrived on a flight from Cairo. Malam El-Rufai declined to follow them without a formal invitation.”

The adviser also stated that El-Rufai’s passport was taken from one of his aides during the encounter.
“They, however, snatched his international passport from an aide.”
Earlier, on Wednesday, El-Rufai said in an interview with BBC Hausa that he believes he could be arrested soon.
He noted that several of his associates had been detained, and he suggested that similar action could be taken against him.
“About four people we worked with in Kaduna have been arrested. So, it may only be a matter of time before they come for me as well,” he said.
El-Rufai, who recently moved from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), had also alleged that political pressure was being mounted on politicians to either defect to the APC or remain within the ruling party.
