The United States has warned that Nigerians could face stricter scrutiny when applying for visas following concerns over fraud and overstays.
In a post on X, the US Mission in Nigeria said the visa system is protected by “rigorous screening.”
The mission then urged Nigerians to report fraudulent visa activities to the appropriate authorities.
“Those who seek to commit fraud bring increased scrutiny on all visa applicants. We protect the U.S. visa system with rigorous screening, and our officers take fraud very seriously,” the post read.
The mission also noted that Nigerians continue to engage legally with the United States as temporary workers, professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors.

“Nigerians continue to engage legally with the United States as temporary workers, professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors. If you are aware of visa fraud, please report it to AbujaFPU@state.gov or LagosFPU@state.gov.”
This follows a similar warning issued on February 9, which indicated that repeated overstays by Nigerian travellers have been a primary factor in visa application denials for other applicants.
U.S. consular authorities have long expressed concerns about visa fraud associated with a minority of applications from Nigeria.
These concerns have previously led to policy measures, including reduced visa validity for some Nigerian travellers and more intensive background checks, aimed at maintaining the integrity of the US immigration system.
