Cape Town International Airport has announced that operations have resumed and normalcy has returned following a fire outbreak that disrupted flights on Tuesday.
The blaze stirred panic among travellers and airport staff. Passengers were evacuated as thick smoke filled the air, and operations were halted. A number of international flights were diverted during the disruption.
The spokesperson of the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), Ofentse Dijoe, however, assured the public that the situation has been contained, with no injuries reported.
“In line with established safety protocols, power across the terminal was temporarily isolated to allow for thorough safety assessments. While power and most systems have been restored, some manual processing remains in place,” said Dijoe.

IOL reports that most check-in systems are now fully operational at press time, but Liift Airlines continues to process passengers manually. The Border Management Authority (BMA) and Customs are using manual systems. Although power has been restored and operations have resumed, travellers have been advised to expect delays and schedule changes as the knock-on effects of the fire continue to be felt.
International departures resumed Tuesday evening, and all aircraft that landed during the incident were processed. Domestic operations have returned to normal.
The Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos suffered a similar fate when the airport’s Terminal One was engulfed in flames on Monday. Three international flights, including those operated by Emirates, British Airways, and Lufthansa, were diverted. Normalcy has returned, and the airport’s airspace has since been reopened.
