World number one Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from this year’s US Open after failing to fully recover from a right knee injury.
The Italian tennis star announced the decision on Friday, saying he and his team made the difficult choice after assessing his condition during his return to training in Monte Carlo.
“Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year,” Sinner wrote.
The 24-year-old said recent sessions on court showed that he still needed more time to regain full fitness before returning to competitive action.
“We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue,” he added.

Sinner described his absence from the Grand Slam tournament as a major disappointment, highlighting his connection with the New York crowd and the event’s atmosphere.
“I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart,” he said. “I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there.”
The withdrawal is a major blow to the US Open, where Sinner was expected to be among the leading title contenders. The reigning Australian Open champion has enjoyed a strong run on the ATP Tour and has established himself as one of the dominant figures in men’s tennis.
However, with his recovery still ongoing, Sinner has chosen to prioritise his long-term fitness rather than risk aggravating the injury.
The US Open begins without one of the sport’s biggest stars, as Sinner continues his rehabilitation with the aim of making a full return to competition.
