Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has accused opposition politicians of staging campaigns to win public attention rather than address real issues.

Wike made this accusation during a media chat on Monday, specifically mentioning Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State; Atiku Abubakar, former vice president of Nigeria; and Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transport, all of whom are currently members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) party.

He said the only opposition party he recognises is the PDP, while the ruling party is the APC.

“The only opposition party I know now is PDP. The ruling party is APC,” Wike said.

The minister suggested that the actions of Obi, Atiku, and Amaechi were aimed at appealing to voters rather than demonstrating genuine concern for the poor.

Speaking on the conduct of Amaechi, Wike said the former minister and governor had reportedly bought corn for campaign purposes, corn he had “never eaten” in his official capacities.

He questioned whether such gestures were meant to mislead impoverished Nigerians.

Wike also talked about Peter Obi’s visits to internally displaced persons (IDP) camps during birthday celebrations, contrasting it with Obi’s record as governor.

He said, “Ask the opposition parties. I don’t know. The only opposition party I know now is PDP. The ruling party is APC. But let me tell you, we like to play to the gallery. I saw Peter Obi, I saw Atiku, and I saw Amaechi going to campaign. What Amaechi did was to buy corn. A corn he had never chewed as a minister on the road. A corn he had never chewed as a governor.”

Wike added, “We like to deceive the poor? Oh, you know, but you never ask yourself, when I was in this position, was I doing that? Is like Peter Obi today, he’s doing a birthday party; he goes to IDP camp.

“When he was governor, did he not have a birthday party? Mention one IDP camp that he did it. You know, we always lied to people who would come to play to the gallery.”
