EU Nations Join French Nuclear Plan

President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that eight European nations have joined an “advanced” nuclear deterrence pact led by France, signalling a historic shift in the continent’s security architecture.

The coalition—which includes Germany, Britain, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, and Denmark—is designed to create a more resilient defensive shield as the Middle East conflict continues to escalate.

In a landmark speech at the Ile Longue nuclear submarine base, Macron also revealed that France will increase its number of nuclear warheads for the first time since the 1990s to ensure the arsenal remains a credible deterrent against modern threats.

A core component of this new strategy involves the deployment of French “strategic air forces” across the European continent. By allowing nuclear-capable Rafale jets to be stationed within the borders of these eight partner nations, France aims to “complicate the calculations” of any potential adversaries.

This decentralised posture is intended to remove the vulnerability of having a single point of failure and to demonstrate a unified European front, particularly as doubts grow regarding the long-term reliability of the United States’ nuclear umbrella.

The scheme also paves the way for deeper military integration, including the “conventional participation” of allied forces in French nuclear activities.

This could involve joint exercises, shared intelligence, and logistical support from non-nuclear allies, building on existing frameworks like the recent “Northwood Declaration” between France and Britain.

While Macron reaffirmed that the ultimate authority to launch a nuclear strike remains exclusively with the French president, he emphasised that France’s “vital interests” now possess a clear and undeniable European dimension.

This move comes at a time of extreme regional instability, following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory attacks across the Middle East.

Macron is positioning France as the primary guarantor of European sovereignty by unveiling this strategy now.

The initiative is expected to spark intense debate within the EU regarding the financing of this “nuclear umbrella” and the balance of power between national independence and collective continental defence.
