Explosion at Peruvian Nightclub Leaves 33 Injured

An explosion inside a nightclub in northern Peru left 33 people injured early on Saturday, authorities said, as investigators examined the incident in a region long troubled by organised crime.

The blast, described as a suspected “attack” by the regional government of the La Libertad department, occurred before dawn at the Dali discotheque near Trujillo, a coastal city about 500 kilometres (310 miles) north of the capital, Lima.

According to footage broadcast by local channel Sol TV Peru, dozens of people were inside the nightclub enjoying a cumbia performance when the explosion shook the building.

“We have 33 injuries reported so far, including five in serious condition,” regional health manager Alberto Florian told the Latina Noticias television programme.

In recent years, Trujillo province has been heavily affected by organised crime. The area has remained under a government-declared state of emergency since March 2025 following a rise in extortion and contract killings.

Peru, more broadly, has been facing a major crime crisis. Police data indicate that 2,200 homicides linked to organised crime were recorded across the country last year.
