Hamas on Saturday urged Iran to avoid striking neighbouring countries while defending itself against attacks by Israel and the United States.

The Palestinian Islamist movement, in a statement, said Iran had the right to respond to the aggression using all available means under international law but called on Tehran to ensure its response does not target nearby states.

“While affirming the right of the Islamic Republic of Iran to respond to this aggression by all available means in accordance with international norms and laws, the movement calls on the brothers in Iran to avoid targeting neighbouring countries,” Hamas said in a statement.

The group had earlier condemned the killing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, on the first day of the conflict, calling it a “heinous crime.”

It acknowledged Khamenei’s long-standing backing for the Palestinian movement.

According to Hamas, Khamenei had provided political, diplomatic and military support to the Palestinian cause and its resistance movement.

“He provided all forms of political, diplomatic and military support to our people, our cause, and our resistance.”
