Madagascar’s President Michael Randrianirina on Sunday appointed anti-corruption chief Mamitiana Rajaonarison as prime minister, days after dismissing the previous premier and dissolving the entire cabinet.
Randrianirina, who took office in October 2025 and has pledged sweeping reforms, said the new prime minister would lead the government “on a clean path” and help restore public confidence.
Rajaonarison had not commented on the appointment as of Sunday.
“That integrity you have is what I expect from you as prime minister,” Randrianirina said in an address broadcast on state television.

“Show that the country needs people of integrity – people who cannot be swayed and who cannot be bought.”
The president did not give a reason for removing former Prime Minister Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo and all cabinet ministers earlier in the week.
Since taking power following a political transition that removed the previous government, Randrianirina has promoted what he calls a “Refoundation” agenda aimed at restoring state authority, tackling corruption and rebuilding public trust.
