The Nigerian government has formally joined the World Energy Council by inaugurating a national member committee and governing board to strengthen the country’s role in global energy policy.
According to a statement issued by the World Energy Council Nigeria, the new committee will provide an independent platform that brings together government, industry, finance, academia, and civil society to address Nigeria’s energy challenges.
The initiative will focus on tackling the energy trilemma by balancing energy security, affordability and environmental sustainability while supporting evidence-based policymaking and investment.
Waltersmith Petroman Oil Limited Chairman Abdulrazaq Isa will chair the Governing Board, while former NNPC Limited Chief Upstream Investment Officer Bala Wunti will serve as the inaugural Chief Executive Officer.

World Energy Council Secretary-General Angela Wilkinson said Nigeria’s participation would strengthen Africa’s voice in global energy discussions ahead of the 2027 World Energy Congress in Riyadh.
The council said Nigeria’s membership comes as the country pursues reforms to expand electricity access, deepen gas development, attract investment and accelerate industrialisation.
Through the organisation’s network of more than 3,000 member organisations across over 100 countries, Nigerian institutions and businesses are expected to gain greater access to global expertise, technology, strategic partnerships and investment opportunities while contributing to international energy policy discussions.
