Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has directed all political appointees intending to contest in the next general elections to step down from their positions on or before Tuesday, March 31, 2026, in line with the Electoral Act.

The directive was conveyed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa, who said the order was backed by an official circular signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ibrahim.

According to the statement, the move is aimed at ensuring compliance with existing electoral laws, particularly provisions regulating the involvement of public office holders in partisan politics.

“Political appointees who intend to contest in the forthcoming elections are required to resign or retire, as applicable, on or before Tuesday, March 31, 2026,” the statement partly read.

It added that the measure is intended to promote neutrality, accountability and fairness in the political process, while creating a level playing field for all aspirants.

The state government also directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies to widely circulate the directive and ensure full compliance.

The development aligns with similar steps taken at both federal and state levels, where authorities have required political appointees to step down ahead of party primaries.

This is part of broader efforts to strengthen transparency, curb abuse of office and build public confidence in the electoral process ahead of the 2027  general elections.
