Police Arrest 12 Suspects Over Fresh Tension in Plateau

Operatives of the Plateau State Police Command have arrested 12 suspected troublemakers in a swift response to attempts to disrupt peace in parts of the state, as authorities intensify efforts to restore calm following recent tensions.

The state Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, disclosed that the suspects were apprehended on Friday shortly after Jumat prayers in the Zololo area of Jos, where they allegedly attempted to incite unrest.

“About 30 minutes after prayers, some miscreants around the Zololo area wanted to create problems for us, but they met us waiting… we have 12 of them arrested,” Ewah said, noting that the suspects were armed with sticks and attempted to move towards the Nasarawa area.

He assured that those arrested would be prosecuted in accordance with the law, warning that security agencies would not tolerate any attempt to destabilise the state.

The commissioner explained that the arrests form part of broader security measures introduced after the visit of President Bola Tinubu, which led to increased deployment of personnel across Plateau.

According to him, four mobile police units and over 300 additional officers have been deployed, alongside reinforcements from other security agencies.

Ewah further revealed that joint patrols involving multiple security forces are ongoing across the state to ensure rapid response to threats and maintain order.

While describing the Jumat prayers as peaceful, he warned of “merchants of conflict” seeking to destabilise the state, but reassured residents of the command’s readiness to counter such threats.

He also emphasised strict enforcement of the ongoing curfew and restrictions, including a ban on commercial motorcycles (okada) and limits on tricycle (keke napep) movement.

The commissioner commended the Plateau State Government for its support and urged residents to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security operatives as efforts continue to restore lasting peace.
