The Nigerian Army’s 8 Division has dismissed social media reports alleging an armed attack on the residence of Bishop Matthew Kukah and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral.
In a statement released Saturday, April 4, 2026, Lt Col. Olaniyi Osoba described the claims as entirely unfounded and misleading.
The military confirmed that no such violence occurred in Sokoto State and assured the public that both the bishop’s home and the cathedral remain secure and fully operational.
The Catholic Diocese of Sokoto also issued a rebuttal, clarifying that the video being circulated alongside the false report actually dates back to May 2022.
Church officials characterised the post as the work of individuals intent on causing social chaos during the holiday period.

They noted that Bishop Kukah is currently observing his Easter duties without any disruption and expressed gratitude to security agencies for their quick action in debunking the misinformation.
To ensure a peaceful holiday, the army and local security forces have implemented heightened safety measures throughout the region. Residents have been urged to remain calm and disregard the fraudulent reports.
Both military and church leaders emphasised their commitment to maintaining stability, concluding with an Easter goodwill message to the faithful as celebrations continue across the state.
