The World Health Organisation (WHO) has suspended medical evacuations from Gaza after a contracted worker was killed during a security incident on Monday.
The agency’s chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the organisation was “devastated” by the death of a person engaged to provide services in the territory, adding that two WHO staff members who were present at the scene were not injured.
He said the incident forced the immediate suspension of planned medical evacuations of patients from Gaza through Rafah to Egypt, noting that the operation would remain on hold until further notice.

“@WHO is devastated to confirm that a person contracted to provide services to the Organisation in Gaza was killed today during a security incident.
“Following the incident, WHO suspended today’s medical evacuation of patients from Gaza via Rafah to Egypt. Medical evacuations will remain suspended until further notice.”
WHO did not provide further details of the circumstances surrounding the incident but stated that relevant authorities were investigating the matter.
He also called for the protection of civilians and humanitarian personnel working in conflict zones.
The suspension comes as tensions in the region heighten, where both Israel and Hamas have accused each other of violating a ceasefire that began on October 10 after two years of war in the Gaza Strip.
