The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismissed a viral video claiming a terrorist attack in Abuja.

The viral clip had claimed “gunshots raining heavily” in Abuja, alleging that terrorists were attempting to take over the city.

But the police slammed it as misleading and false.

In a post on X, the command said there was “no security breach anywhere” in the capital, adding that the footage had been manipulated.

“The viral video alleging a terrorist attack in Abuja is FALSE and MISLEADING. There is no security breach anywhere in the FCT,” the police said.

It added that findings showed the gunshot sounds in the video were edited and placed over unrelated footage.

“Findings show the gunshots were edited and superimposed on unrelated footage,” the statement said.

The police also said the Commissioner of Police has ordered a forensic investigation to identify and arrest those responsible for circulating the video.

“The CP has ordered a forensic investigation to identify and apprehend those behind this deliberate attempt to incite panic,” it added.

Authorities urged residents to disregard the video and avoid sharing unverified content.

The clarification comes amid heightened security concerns after the United States Department of State authorised the voluntary departure of non-essential embassy staff and their families from Abuja, due to a “deteriorating security situation”.

Shortly after the advisory, visa appointment services at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja were suspended, while operations continue at the consulate in Lagos.
