A Ghanaian Premier League footballer, Dominic Frimpong, has been killed following an incident in which armed individuals allegedly attacked his team’s bus while returning from an away fixture on Sunday, the Ghana Football Association reported Monday.

Berekum Chelsea FC claimed in a statement that “masked men wielding guns and assault rifles” fired on the team bus and that players were forced to take cover in nearby bushes.

The Ghana Police Service said the incident occurred around 10:30 pm local time (2230 GMT) along the Ahyiresu-Kwame Dwumor Sredo road in the Nyinahin District of the Ashanti region.

The Ghana Football Association described the event as “tragic” and a “huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole.”

The association added, “Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league.”

Local media reported that the 20-year-old forward joined Berekum Chelsea FC on loan from Aduana Stars FC at the beginning of the year and played 13 games, scoring two goals for the club.
