Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell announced his resignation from Congress on Monday following a series of sexual misconduct allegations.
In a statement shared on X, the California lawmaker apologised to his family and constituents for “mistakes in judgement” while simultaneously vowing to contest the most serious claims levelled against him.

The political fallout intensified over the weekend as reports emerged detailing accusations from four women.
Among the most severe accounts was that of a former staff member, who alleged that Swalwell assaulted her on two occasions while she was incapacitated and unable to provide consent.

Before his formal resignation from the House of Representatives, Swalwell had already suspended his campaign for the governorship of California.
His departure marks a swift end to his current political ambitions as he shifts focus toward addressing the allegations and taking personal responsibility for his past actions.
