The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) chapter of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has lamented the delay in the payment of salaries to its members and those of colleagues in other federal universities.

The union, in a letter signed by its chairman, Falowo Naheem, addressed to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, said their members were facing unprecedented hardship due to the delay in salary payments, which they said has become unbearable.

Naheem said the delay, which appears to be a deliberate attempt to punish workers for their demand to exit the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System, has become unacceptable.

He lamented that many SSANU members were forced to celebrate Easter without salaries, describing it as insensitive and reflective of the harsh economic realities facing families dependent on monthly earnings.

“It is both painful and unacceptable that dedicated workers have to celebrate Easter without salaries. This is not only insensitive but a clear reflection of the harsh realities faced by thousands of families who depend on these earnings for survival,” the letter read in part.

According to Naheem, the issue of salary delays and other labour concerns was deliberated at the 54th National Executive Council meeting of SSANU, held at Ekiti State University on March 26, 2026.

The union’s chairman also referenced a communiqué signed by SSANU National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, which issued a final ultimatum to the Nigerian Government from April 1 to April 30, 2026, to conclude ongoing renegotiations and implement agreements with non-teaching unions.

Naheem emphasised that although industrial action was not the preferred option, the continued neglect of workers’ welfare would leave the union’s members with no alternative.

“We therefore respectfully call on your Excellency to take immediate and decisive steps to ensure the prompt payment of salaries, conclude the ongoing renegotiation process without further delay, and settle all outstanding entitlements owed to university workers,” Naheem added.
