United States Rapper Kanye West is scheduled to perform in Albania’s capital Tirana in July, the country’s Culture Minister Blendi Gonxhe told AFP on Saturday.

Gonxhe said the July 11 concert represents another step in efforts to position the country as a hub for large-scale entertainment events.

The rapper, also known as Ye, has faced widespread criticism in recent years over controversial remarks, including statements perceived as antisemitic and sympathetic to Nazi ideology.

Some of his recent international appearances have been cancelled, including planned performances in London and Poland,  due to backlash over those comments.

Authorities in the United Kingdom reportedly barred him from entering the country, leading to the cancellation of a scheduled multi-day music event, while Polish officials also cancelled a planned show, citing concerns that his actions conflicted with national values.

Despite the controversy, organisers in Albania are pressing ahead with the concert, with plans for a specially constructed venue expected to accommodate up to 60,000 attendees.
