Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has addressed long-standing questions regarding his history of switching political affiliations, framing his moves as a matter of principle rather than opportunism.

Speaking on News Central TV’s 60 Minutes with Mr Kay, Obi explained that his departures from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) were driven by a refusal to compromise his core beliefs for the sake of party loyalty.

Drawing on historical and contemporary figures, Obi cited Winston Churchill and Raila Odinga to justify his political trajectory.

He noted that while some change their principles for a party, he chooses to change parties to preserve his principles.

He likened a political party to a “vehicle” that serves a destination, arguing that if a vehicle is no longer headed toward the intended goal of a better society, a leader is obligated to change it to reach that destination.

Obi was candid about the specific reasons for his past transitions, stating that he was “forced” to leave APGA and chose to exit the PDP because the process of governance had become fundamentally compromised.

He emphasised that none of his actions was transactional or for personal gain. Instead, he maintained that his goal has remained consistent: building a society that prioritises the welfare of the poor and ensures that the right things are done for the country.

Responding to accusations of inconsistency, the former governor of Anambra State insisted that his character and message have remained unchanged regardless of the platform he occupies.

He pointed to his record of integrity, asserting that he has never relied on falsehoods or forged credentials to advance his career.

For Obi, the method by which a leader attains power is just as vital as their actions in office, serving as the ultimate test of their commitment to a better nation.
