The African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee has declared its absolute backing for South African President Cyril Ramaphosa following high-level discussions regarding the “Farmgate” scandal.

Party Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula announced at a Johannesburg press briefing that the president retains the full and continued support of the governing party’s top decision-making body.

Mbalula firmly stated that the leadership has not entertained any discussions regarding a recall, emphasising that Ramaphosa’s resignation is entirely off the table.

This unified show of party solidarity arrives at a critical juncture, just days after the Constitutional Court revived formal impeachment proceedings against the head of state.

The controversy centres on the theft of $580,000 in foreign currency that had been concealed inside a sofa at Ramaphosa’s private ranch.

While the incident has drawn fierce criticism and intense scrutiny regarding the origin, declaration, and unusual storage of the cash, the president has consistently maintained his innocence and intends to legally challenge the independent panel report alleging preliminary misconduct.

Despite the judicial escalation, political analysts suggest that Ramaphosa is highly likely to survive the impending parliamentary inquiry.

The next phase of the process requires the establishment of a dedicated parliamentary impeachment committee to investigate the allegations further.

The president has a strong legislative shield against his removal from office, with the ANC holding some 40 per cent of the seats in parliament, as a final impeachment vote requires a strict two-thirds majority of the National Assembly.
