Brazil’s data protection agency has fined TikTok nearly $30 million over the handling of children’s and teenagers’ data.

The National Data Protection Agency (ANPD) announced the 153.7 million reais ($29.9 million) fine on Tuesday, citing “irregularities in the processing of data belonging to children and adolescents”. The agency also ordered TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to delete data collected in violation of regulations.

TikTok has agreed to implement a compliance plan to better protect children and teenagers, according to the ANPD.

The agency said the measures were part of efforts to ensure that digital platforms comply with Brazil’s data protection rules.

Earlier this month, the ANPD also ordered the suspension of streaming platform Discord after a teenage girl was allegedly encouraged to take her own life during a broadcast.

The latest action against TikTok highlights growing scrutiny of digital platforms over the protection and safety of young users.
