Bolivia and Colombia have expelled each other’s ambassadors after tensions over anti-government protests in Bolivia.

According to AFP, Bolivia announced on Wednesday that it was expelling Colombia’s ambassador, accusing Colombian President Gustavo Petro of interfering in its internal affairs.

The dispute began after Petro described the ongoing protests in Bolivia as a “popular insurrection” and offered to help mediate the crisis.

Bolivia’s government said the comments violated the principles of sovereignty and non-interference between countries. In response, Colombia said Bolivia’s ambassador to Bogota will also be asked to leave.

“By way of reciprocity, a conclusion of functions is announced for Mr. Ariel Percy Molina Pimentel,” Colombia’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

The protests in Bolivia have lasted for weeks, with farmers, miners, and workers demonstrating against the economic policies of its President, Rodrigo Paz. The government has accused supporters of former president Evo Morales of trying to destabilise the country.

Petro criticised Bolivia’s decision, warning that without “broad national dialogue,” the country could experience serious violence.

President Paz took office last year during Bolivia’s worst economic crisis in decades. His government removed fuel subsidies in an attempt to stabilise the economy, but many citizens have protested against rising hardship and living costs.

Earlier this week, clashes broke out in the capital, La Paz, as riot police battled protesters demanding Paz’s resignation.
