Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a new decree on Monday offering debt relief of up to 10 million rubles ($139,000) to new army recruits, Russian soldiers fighting in the Ukraine war, and their spouses.
According to the Kremlin, Russians who signed military contracts after May 1 this year will qualify for the debt exemption.
The army contract must last for at least one year and be linked to what Russia calls its “fulfilling the tasks of the special military operation” in Ukraine. The move is part of Russia’s continued support measures for troops involved in the war.

Russia’s economy has largely focused on military spending since the war began, with defence needs taking priority over other sectors. Putin has also called for returning war veterans to be given important jobs and opportunities back home.
For more than four years, Russia has offered high salaries and financial incentives to encourage men to join the military campaign in Ukraine.
