Iranian authorities have executed a man accused of spying for Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, according to the country’s judiciary.
The judiciary’s Mizan Online website said Gholamreza Khani Shakarab was convicted of intelligence cooperation and espionage for Israel and that his death sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court.
“Gholamreza Khani Shakarab was executed on charges of intelligence cooperation and espionage in favour of the Zionist regime,” the website read.
Shakarab was hanged on Tuesday after being found guilty of working with Mossad and attempting to recruit people inside Iran for security-related operations. Authorities also claimed he was involved in plans linked to identifying targets abroad, but did not provide independent evidence.

Mizan described him as part of a group carrying out operations for Mossad outside Iran and said he was arrested after an intelligence operation by security forces. Mizan said, “one of the operational ringleaders of Mossad abroad… who was seeking to recruit individuals inside the country” for “anti-security actions.
Ultimately, in a complex operation and using intelligence deception tactics, the accused was guided into the country and arrested,” adding that he was detained by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps intelligence forces.
The report added that he was brought into the country through what it called a “deceptive operation” before his arrest. This execution is part of a series of recent cases in Iran involving alleged espionage and security offences following tensions linked to the ongoing conflict with Israel and the United States (US).
