Two school children and two adults were killed in a crash between a train and a school minibus in Buggenhout, Belgium.
Belgian mobility minister Jean-Luc Crucke said the level-crossing barriers were down when the accident occurred. “My first thoughts are with the victims,” he said.
Police said the bus was carrying seven children, a driver, and a chaperone at the time of the crash. The accident happened shortly after 08:00 local time (06:00 GMT).
Federal police spokeswoman An Berger said no one on the train was injured, although one person was treated for shock. She added that the children on the bus were mainly secondary school students going to a special education school.
Images from the scene showed the minibus on its side near Aalst, close to Brussels. Flemish education minister Zuhal Demir described the incident as tragic, saying, “What heartbreaking news,” and sent her condolences to the victims and their families.
