Qatar has earned its first-ever FIFA World Cup point after securing a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their opening match of the tournament on Saturday.
Switzerland looked ready to begin their World Cup campaign with a victory after Breel Embolo converted a first-half penalty in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The Swiss dominated much of the game and created numerous chances but failed to extend their lead despite registering 26 shots.
Qatar, appearing in only their second World Cup after hosting the 2022 tournament, struggled for long periods but remained in the contest.

Their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time when veteran defender Boualem Khoukhi rose to head home an equaliser in the 94th minute, prompting celebrations among the Qatar players and coaching staff.
The result marked a memorable World Cup debut for Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui.
Lopetegui had been due to lead Spain at the 2018 World Cup but was dismissed just before the tournament began after agreeing to become Real Madrid manager.
Switzerland took the lead in the 13th minute after a penalty was awarded when goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada brought down Remo Freuler inside the box. Embolo calmly converted from the spot.
Despite controlling possession and creating several opportunities, Switzerland could not find a second goal and were punished late in the game.
The draw leaves both teams with one point from their opening match.
Switzerland will face Bosnia on Thursday in Los Angeles, while Qatar take on co-hosts Canada in Vancouver on the same day.
