President Joseph Boakai vowed on Tuesday to expose and destroy criminal networks after law enforcement pulled off one of the largest drug busts in Liberian history.
Authorities recently seized roughly 240 kilograms of cocaine, worth more than $19 million, at Roberts International Airport in Monrovia.
The Swiss NGO Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime recently flagged West Africa as a critical transit zone for Latin American cocaine heading to European markets.
Boakai declared in a national address that criminal syndicates will no longer use Liberia as a haven, warehouse, or operational base.
The national police and Liberia’s anti-drug agency will lead a joint investigation to hold every responsible individual accountable under the law.
The major bust mirrors a broader regional surge in narcotics trafficking.
Senegal’s customs authorities also announced on Tuesday that they intercepted 970 kilograms of cocaine in the centre of their country.

Meanwhile, in neighbouring Sierra Leone, opposition leader Abdulai Kargbo voiced deep concerns over rising criminal ties after Spanish police recently seized 30 tonnes of cocaine on a ship that departed from Freetown.
