The African Development Bank (AfDB) approved a $234 million (205 million euro) loan on Thursday to fund Morocco’s high-speed rail expansion and infrastructure modernisation project.
The financial package targets the high-traffic Kenitra-Marrakech railway corridor, which carries a massive share of the nation’s passenger and freight transit.
In an official statement, the bank confirmed that the funding will significantly boost shipping capacity and improve overall operational performance along this critical transportation hub.
This loan directly backs Morocco’s aggressive $10 billion master plan to overhaul its intercity and urban rail networks before co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal.

The primary expansion project involves building a 430-kilometre (267-mile) high-speed line running from Kenitra on the Atlantic coast down to Marrakech, providing high-speed transit connections through major urban hubs like Rabat and Casablanca.
