Kenyan runner Emmanuel Wanyonyi shattered the men’s 1,000-metre world record on Friday at the Monaco Diamond League meet.
He crossed the finish line in a blistering two minutes and 11.83 seconds, shaving 0.13 seconds off the previous record that his compatriot Noah Ngeny set 27 years ago.
Wanyonyi, who already holds the title of 800-metre Olympic champion, dominated the race from start to finish.
He left his competitors trailing behind, crossing the line nearly a full second ahead of Great Britain’s Jake Wightman, while Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati secured third place.
The victory stunned the athletic world, particularly because Wanyonyi had never run the distance competitively before.

Although runners rarely contest the 1,000-metre event and neither the Olympics nor the World Athletics Championships include it in their schedules, Wanyonyi expressed immense joy at his instant success and thanked his fellow athletes for pushing him to his absolute limit.
