The Senate has warned Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde against making statements that could affect ongoing efforts by security agencies to fight terrorism and kidnapping in Nigeria.

The warning came after Makinde called for the United Nations (UN) and other international bodies to investigate the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The Senate issued the caution on Tuesday while considering a motion on the successful rescue of 39 pupils and seven teachers abducted by terrorists on May 15, 2026.

The motion, sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, praised the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for their role in securing the release of the victims after more than 50 days in captivity.

Lawmakers also commended President Bola Tinubu for directing security agencies to use all available resources to ensure the victims’ safe return.

The Senate said the operation led to the arrest of eight suspected terrorists, while several others were killed during the mission.

However, lawmakers noted that the rescue operation came with heavy sacrifices, as three security personnel lost their lives during the mission.

They included Lieutenant F.A. Isaac and Private Silas Musa of the Nigerian Army, as well as Sergeant Abena John Jerome of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Senate also recognised Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain, who was injured during the operation.

The chamber expressed sadness over the death of one of the abducted teachers but described the rescue of the remaining victims as a major achievement.

The Senate urged the government to provide the families of the fallen officers with their full benefits, including insurance payments, pensions and other entitlements.

It also called for improved welfare, training, equipment and support for security personnel across the country.

Senators further urged the government to strengthen military and intelligence operations against terrorists, kidnappers and bandits through better surveillance, modern equipment and improved logistics.

The Senate also called on security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue other Nigerians still held captive.

The warning to Governor Makinde was introduced by Senator Adams Oshiomhole and supported by Senator Aniekan Bassey.
