The Delta State Police Command has arrested two suspects and recovered two pump-action guns, 18 live cartridges and other dangerous items in separate intelligence-led operations across the state.
The command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, said in a statement issued on Sunday that operatives from the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and the Command Anti-Cult Unit (CACU) carried out the operations as part of efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms and violent crime.
On September 12, 2026, VCRU operatives acting on intelligence stormed a residence in Obiaruku, where the occupant was suspected of possessing a firearm and ammunition.
Edafe said the suspect, 36-year-old Joel Iwomi of Umuebu, Obiaruku, resisted the operatives’ attempts to enter the premises.
The operatives eventually gained entry and recovered a pump-action gun and 18 live cartridges during a search of the residence.
Iwomi was arrested and taken into custody, while the police said the investigation is ongoing.
In a separate operation on September 9, CACU operatives arrested Chukwuka Nzete, also known as “Ododo”, in Isupe Community, Ndokwa West Local Government Area.
The police said Nzete was suspected of involvement in the illegal sale and proliferation of firearms and allegedly operated a shrine where suspected criminal elements were fortified.
A search of his residence led to the recovery of another pump-action gun, four dagger knives, a battle axe and pots containing substances suspected to be charms.
Investigators also took the suspect into custody as they work to establish the full extent of his activities and possible links with other criminal elements.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, Samuel Erale, reaffirmed the command’s resolve to deny criminal elements access to illicit firearms and other weapons capable of threatening public safety.
Eralе also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly provide credible information about suspicious persons, illegal firearms and criminal activities in their communities.
He assured residents that actionable information would be treated with the necessary confidentiality.
