The Nigerian Senate passed a bill on Thursday proposing a ₦50,000 fine for anyone convicted of preaching, hawking, or trading inside commercial vehicles.
Lawmakers designed this restriction under the Federal Road Safety Corps (Amendment) Bill, 2026, to eliminate dangerous distractions for drivers and protect commuters.
The legislation now awaits presidential assent before officially becoming law.
The amended bill also cracks down heavily on drunk driving by raising the penalty for driving under the influence from ₦5,000 to ₦100,000, alongside a potential two-year prison sentence.
Furthermore, motorists who refuse to cooperate with roadside breath tests conducted by road safety officials face a ₦50,000 fine, six months in prison, or both.
To reduce high rates of road crashes, lawmakers increased fines for other dangerous driving behaviours to ₦100,000, including speeding, reckless driving, and running traffic lights.

Through this comprehensive review of 52 distinct traffic violations, the Senate aims to strengthen enforcement powers and force better compliance on the nation’s roads.
