United States President Donald Trump has joined the growing list of critics of England’s tactics in their World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina.
Speaking on Friday, Trump criticised England manager Thomas Tuchel’s decision to adopt a defensive approach after his side took the lead against Argentina on Wednesday.
Trump referenced England captain Harry Kane, with whom he played a round of golf in Florida 18 months ago, while speaking at a reception in New York alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
“You have a great player in England, who I played golf with, Harry,” Trump said.
“They perhaps made a mistake when they made him a defensive player. What do I know about soccer?” he added.

“They took the lead and they took their best player and they put him on defence.
“We got to be a little offensive, right? What do I know about coaching?”
Tuchel has faced criticism for replacing two forwards with defenders in the final 30 minutes of the match against Argentina, as England retreated to protect their lead, even though Kane remained on the pitch.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi capitalised on the extra space, providing the assists for both goals as the South Americans came from behind to secure a place in the World Cup final.
Tuchel, however, defended his tactical decisions on Friday.
“No, I don’t regret my decision. I thought we had become too passive,” Tuchel said. “I was trying to help the team.”
