Ghana to Repatriate 1,000 More Citizens from South Africa

Ghana will repatriate another 1,000 citizens from South Africa as violence targeting foreign nationals continues, with the latest return flights scheduled for Sunday and Monday.

The Ghanaian government said the operation marks the final phase of its evacuation programme after successfully bringing home 926 nationals in earlier flights.

In a statement issued late Saturday, the Foreign Ministry said special flights carrying the remaining migrant workers would begin arriving, completing the country’s emergency evacuation effort.

President John Mahama has strongly condemned the attacks, urging the African Union to place what he described as xenophobic violence in South Africa on its agenda. He also accused the South African government of not doing enough to halt the unrest.

The violence has triggered a large-scale exodus of foreign nationals, with figures from various governments indicating that more than 160,000 mostly African migrants have left South Africa since May.
