Iran’s foreign ministry has issued a stern warning to Ukraine following an attack on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea over the weekend, calling the action “absolutely illegal and unjustified.”
The incident, which Tehran says led to the explosion of the Iranian ship, killed one sailor and injured several others, has escalated tensions between the two nations.
In a weekly press briefing, ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei described Ukraine’s strike as “contrary to the Charter of the United Nations, as well as a dangerous act of adventurism that will certainly not go unanswered by us.” He added that the consequences of Ukraine’s action “will certainly be unforeseen,” underscoring Tehran’s intent to respond decisively.
The attack reportedly targeted vessels transporting military cargo involving Iran, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who confirmed that Kyiv had carried out long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea on Saturday.
While Kyiv framed the operation as a military measure, Iran characterised it as a violation of international law, emphasising that “the Ukrainian regime must certainly be held accountable for it,” Baqaei stated.
The incident highlights growing volatility in the Caspian region, where disputes over shipping and military logistics have increasingly intersected with broader geopolitical tensions. Analysts note that Tehran’s warning signals potential escalation, with the possibility of retaliatory measures against Ukraine or related assets.
This latest confrontation adds to a series of maritime and military tensions in the region, raising concerns over security for commercial and military vessels navigating the Caspian Sea.
