A Kenya Airways aircraft suffered a tyre burst upon touchdown at Cape Town International Airport on Tuesday afternoon, shutting down the main runway and causing widespread flight delays.

All passengers disembarked safely, but the disabled plane blocked the runway for several hours, forcing inbound flights to divert to alternate airports and putting international departures on hold.

Airports Company South Africa eventually reopened the main runway after engineering crews repaired the aircraft and cleared it from the tarmac.

Flight operations are gradually returning to normal at South Africa’s second-busiest airport, though minor delays continue while airlines clear the backlog.
