Unidentified assailants critically injured David Owori, the 28-year-old captain of Ugandan soccer club SC Villa, leading to his death in Kampala.
Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala confirmed that attackers assaulted Owori on Tuesday in a city suburb.
Passers-by discovered the unconscious athlete and transported him to a local hospital before medical staff transferred him to a second facility, where doctors pronounced him dead.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations mourned the national team player, stating, “David was not just a footballer. He was both a leader and an inspiration to a generation. As captain of SC Villa, he led with courage, humility and passion. In the Uganda Cranes jersey, he carried the hopes of a nation.”
Following the announcement, outraged citizens took to X to condemn the killing and criticise the government’s failure to control rampant crime in the East African capital.
The fatal attack follows the June killing of Ugandan rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, whom a Kampala mob assaulted after allegedly mistaking him for a thief.
Responding to the escalating violence, the state-run National Council of Sports Uganda noted, “Sadly, Ugandan sport has been hit with many such tragedies lately, and we hope for justice and a lasting solution.”
Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa formally urged authorities to resolve the nation’s widening security crisis.
