Australia, Vietnam Deepen Defence Ties

Australia and Vietnam agreed on Tuesday to expand military cooperation as both nations work to counter China’s growing footprint in the Pacific and South China Sea.

Following bilateral talks in Canberra, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Vietnamese leader To Lam announced that their defence forces will enhance joint training exercises and collaborate more closely on regional maritime security.

The deal reflects shared security concerns as Beijing expands its military presence across contested waters.

While Vietnam faces persistent territorial disputes with China in the South China Sea, Australia is actively modernising its military capabilities and hosting a larger US military footprint.

Alongside the defence framework, Australia and Vietnam agreed to bolster economic ties, which include reopening Vietnamese market access for Australian game meat like kangaroo.
