Troops of Sector 1, Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, have foiled an attack by suspected armed herders on Azege Village in the Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The acting media information officer of the headquarters of Operation Whirl Stroke, Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday.
According to Zubairu, troops received a distress call on August 10 reporting an attack on Azege Community in Tombo Council Ward.
“On arrival, the troops made contact with the armed criminals and engaged them in a gunfight,” Zubairu said.
Zubairu said the attackers were eventually overwhelmed by the troops’ superior firepower and fled the area.
“As a result, the assailants were overwhelmed by the troops’ superior firepower and fled in disarray,” he said.
The troops subsequently pursued the fleeing attackers and discovered one of the suspected armed herders neutralised during the encounter.
According to Zubairu, troops recovered an AK-47 rifle, a magazine loaded with 16 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and a Nokia mobile phone from the scene.
“The recovered items have been secured, while the remains of the neutralised assailant was evacuated by the police,” Zubairu said.
He added that security forces were continuing efforts to track and apprehend other members of the group who escaped during the encounter.
The Joint Task Force commended the troops for what it described as their “tactical resilience” and praised the Nigerian Police Force for its “effective cooperation.”
The task force also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements and activities in their communities to security agencies.
