The Nigerian government has reached a series of resolutions with airline operators and aviation unions following an emergency stakeholders’ meeting convened to address recent industrial tensions that disrupted activities at some airports across Nigeria.

The meeting, held on Thursday, August 13, 2026, was convened by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, CON, following unions’ temporary suspension of industrial action on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

According to a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mahmud Adam Kambari, the meeting brought together airline operators, aviation unions and heads of aviation agencies to find solutions to issues affecting the sector.

One of the key resolutions was that the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and other aviation agencies would obtain payment schedules from airlines to settle outstanding obligations. The repayment plans are expected to take into account the airlines’ operational costs and current economic realities.

The statement added that Directors of Finance and Accounts in aviation agencies would meet individually with airlines within one week to agree on realistic repayment timelines.

The government also addressed concerns surrounding workers’ union membership. The minister reaffirmed workers’ right to choose whether to belong to unions, stating that employees should be able to make such decisions independently.

As part of the resolution, the NCAA was directed to ensure that aviation unions have direct access to workers of all airlines to distribute union registration forms. Airlines that prevent this process, according to the statement, could face sanctions from the regulator.

The stakeholders agreed to reconvene after one month to review progress and assess the implementation of the resolutions.

The minister assured stakeholders of the government’s commitment to maintaining a safe, efficient, and sustainable aviation sector, while reiterating the President Bola Tinubu administration’s focus on industrial harmony and growth in the industry.
