Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has urged residents to remain peaceful as the Independent National Electoral Commission begins collating results from Saturday’s governorship election.
Adeleke, who is seeking a second term on the Accord Party platform, said voters had turned out in large numbers and urged security agencies to remain vigilant as results move from polling units to wards and local government areas.
“Against all odds, the people of Osun State have turned out in large numbers and are speaking with one voice,” Adeleke said in a post on X on Saturday.
“The safety and protection of our people is paramount,” he added.
The governor commended security agencies deployed for the election and urged them to remain vigilant during the collation of results.
“I commend the security agencies deployed for this election and urge them to remain vigilant as we move into the collation of results; from polling units to wards to local government areas,” he said.
Adeleke also called on INEC to ensure that the process remained credible.
“I also call on INEC to uphold the highest standards of integrity throughout this process,” he said.
The governor expressed confidence in the institutions responsible for the election, saying the national government had provided adequate security.
“The federal government has provided adequate security, and I am confident in the professionalism of all institutions involved,” Adeleke said.
He urged political actors and residents to respect the election outcome, saying the process’s legitimacy depended on protecting voters’ choices.
“Democracy is at its strongest when we honor the wishes of our people and protect the sanctity of their votes,” he said.
“To every Osun citizen: I urge you to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and committed to this democratic moment,” Adeleke added.
The governor’s call for calm came against the backdrop of heightened political tension surrounding the election and reports of alleged arrests and other incidents involving supporters of the competing parties.
Adeleke had condemned the reported arrest of the Osun chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Sunday Bisi, and demanded his immediate release.
