Zambian Police have arrested 11 people, including senior political figures, after security forces seized high-grade military weapons and ammunition during a raid in Lusaka.
The operation took place on Thursday night at a premises in the Kabulonga area after a tip-off from members of the public, according to a statement the Zambian government issued on Sunday.
The government said the suspects had been under surveillance for several years and were allegedly linked to military plans involving foreign nationals and illegal military training camps.
The Police said the suspects were found with restricted military weapons, ammunition and other materials allegedly intended for an armed insurrection.
The statement said some occupants of the premises opened fire on law enforcement agents during the operation, leading to an exchange of gunfire.

Some suspects reportedly escaped, and their whereabouts remain unknown.
Among the 11 people arrested are George Chisanga, Bishop Trevor Mwamba, Simon Phiri, Richard Banda, Francis Mulenga and Patrick Mwansa, the husband of former President Edgar Lungu’s daughter.
The government also confirmed that Brian Mundubile, a presidential candidate of the NRPUP, was found at the scene.
It said the arrested suspects were being held at various police stations in Lusaka and faced various criminal charges.
“The suspects have been charged and access will be given to their families and their Lawyers,” the statement said.
The government said investigations were ongoing and promised to provide further updates.
The operation has raised concerns over alleged attempts to organise armed groups and military activities outside the control of the state.
