Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has commissioned the Elele-Egbeda-Omoku dual carriageway, which links three local government areas (LGAs) in the state.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Thursday, the governor said the 33.5-kilometre road, which includes a river-crossing bridge, will curb kidnapping and illegal oil bunkering along the corridor.
The governor said the project was designed not only to improve transportation but also to strengthen security in communities along the route.
“We already know what normally happens in this road. It is a corridor for kidnapping. It is also a very big corridor for bunkering,” Fubara said.
He said the completed project would significantly disrupt criminal activities along the route.
“I’m very, very convinced that with what we have done today, those things will be things of the past,” he said.
Fubara added the improved road would enable security agencies to operate more effectively in the area.

“Even the activities of the men of the underworld will be limited because they operate where there are bad roads,” Fubara said.
“They operate where normal life does not exist,” he added.
The governor also noted the lighting installed along the road, saying it would improve visibility and security at night.
Fubara described the project as a statement of his administration’s commitment to communities along the route.
“It’s not just a project, it’s a statement that we have made to show our people, the three local governments, the community that are most close to this project, that we care for you and your concerns are our concern,” he said.
The governor thanked residents for their support and described the road’s completion as the fulfilment of a commitment by his administration.
“I want to thank you for this special support that you’ve given to us, for us today to come here to say to the glory of God that promise made is a promise kept,” he added.
