The Nigerian government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday in a statement issued on Friday by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora, urging citizens to reflect on the values associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, including compassion, humility and service to others.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the minister said.

“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them.”

The minister also called on Nigerians to use the celebration as an opportunity to pray for peace, unity and national cohesion, stressing that maintaining harmony remains a shared responsibility among citizens.

He urged members of the Muslim community and Nigerians generally to mark the occasion with restraint and respect for one another, while wishing them a peaceful and joyous Eid celebration.

Tunji-Ojo further reaffirmed the Bola Tinubu administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property, as well as supporting efforts to sustain peace across the country.

The declaration gives workers and citizens an opportunity to join Muslim faithful in commemorating Eid ul Mawlid while reflecting on values of tolerance, kindness, and peaceful coexistence.
